What Are You Excited About?
At the moment there is really one thing I am most excited about and that’s the completion of my first draft of my second book. Completing a first draft essentially is when you have officially told yourself the story and how you want it to play out. It is the bones or foundation for your final draft to be built upon. You have your basics planned and all that is left is to fix it up, correct the grammar, making the necessary changes before handing it off to the editor to tear to piece before you go through and fix it for the publish process.
I love writing the first draft because that’s when you get to learn about your character and see how they have changed. You can place them in situations that you may later remove, but they help test the personality of this thing you have created. You’ve essentially sketched out what you want before adding the paint to your canvas.
I’m almost done writing my first draft of my second book. I’m close to having my foundation to build from, and hopefully a sketch to paint by the time I have completed it.
Only time will tell… but I can’t help but be excited. (^.^)

I think writing the first draft is definitely the best part because you are getting to explore your world and see the story play out. It’s like reading a book for the first time. The second time is fun, but the first time is one you’ll always remember. ^.^ Though, the hardest part is making sure you get the first draft out. I know there are quite a few edit-as-you-go writers out there that will start editing before the first draft is even done, but that’s their choice. :p
Congrats, by the way! This is awesome!

I have a similar habit with the edit-as-you-go. If I leave my draft alone for too long I have to go back to the beginning to remember what I have written… which usually results in my making changes right there and not waiting until I’ve completed the draft. I’ve scaled back on how often I do it though, since the whole reason I haven’t published anything until my first book was due to my over editing before draft completion. XD

Haha! Thankfully, I don’t have that problem. I’m a vomit writer. I bust things out onto the page so quickly that I never seem to have time to actually edit-as-I-go, but that’s okay. I’ll have TONS to edit when I go back. :p Woops! And I have to remind myself some days, too, when I’ve left a draft for too long. It’s normal. It helps with consistency.

I have my days that I can do that – vomit write – if I have a set idea that I’ve planned throughout the day to write. They are rare but it is fun going back to reread those sections and not remembering writing them. XD

Haha! I have a feeling that’s going to be what happens when I do my polish edit here on my novel. Betas were talking about it and I was like ‘what? That doesn’t happen in my book.’ :p That’s what I get for adding a dozen chapters after thinking the story was done. Haha!

That happened with my first book. Half those chapters weren’t in the first draft. 😛

See, I prefer the editing (most of the time). I like taking the raw writing and turning it into something really good. Or maybe I’m just saying that right now because I’m really struggling with my current first-draft WIP … world-building is killing me. Ah. So it goes.

World building can be a hard thing to work out. There is a lot to consider. What genre is your WIP?

YA Fantasy. So lots of world-building to do!

I feel your pain. The way I found to make it easy was to establish the cultures first and the territories before getting into the details. I’m on my second book and there are still moments I go ‘shoot… I didn’t think of _________’. XD

Yes, I have a separate document with all that info in it. But you’re right, there’s so much to think about!

Yep. Trying to make everything work together and work with your story is a long process but worth it in the end.
