Something You Miss
I’m not talking about doing something really bad and being sent to jail – and therefore you are no longer innocent. No, the innocence I speak of we’ve all had in some point in our life. The childhood innocence where you’re parents were always right, you never had to do work if you didn’t want to, your only issues were with school or friends, and you could be naive about the world around you. That is the sort of innocence I miss.
As a child you only know what people allow you to know. You’re hidden from the dark world around you, everything in candy coated or rose coloured. You can play games, explore your imagination more freely, and not have to worry about the real stresses of the world. I’m not saying every child has the luxury. Unfortunately there are many who lose their innocence too young, that have to grow up too fast… and to know that there are you out there that that’s happened to upsets me because a child to have a chance to a childhood not matter what. It are those innocent years you learn to become yourself, and understand the world around you.
When I was a kid I had a crazy imagination that created so many amazing things… one being Gaitan, the world my book is based in. I was allowed to explore my writing and world because I had the pleasure of not having to grow up too quickly.
Now, I’m an adult. I have bills to pay, rent to pay, food to buy/ cook, house to clean, car to service and job to work. The news tells me that jobs are crap, money is crap, people are crap, and the world is going to hell in a hand basket on the daily. I read about murders, rapes, wars, raising costs, and the 1%. These things I was clouded from, or didn’t put much stock in as a kid because ‘it didn’t effect me’.
Childhood innocence is what I miss because when I was child, my world felt was smaller.
