This week we are talking about writing Kryptonite and for those that don’t know what that is… basically what is your writing weakness. I was trying to be all smart with wanting to do a comparison between my green kryptonite and my red kryptonite but for the sake of my readers who aren’t Superman fans… I will just focus on my weakness (green kryptonite).
With that said, my writing weakness is the internet.
The internet can be useful with research but man it ruins any motivation I have to write. I may start off wanting to research about medical practices of the medieval age (or lack there of) and eight hours later be watching YouTube videos of cats saying ‘no’. The internet is not only the place I do research but also where I sell my books and connect with my readership. So, as much as I want to disconnect I am tied to it.
The worst part – I know I should be doing something else but I get distracted by so many people online or information online that I never get back to my intended purpose for opening up my browser in the first place. I know I’m not alone with this problem. Many of you have told me that the internet hinders your writing drive.
What is your writing krytonite? Is it the internet or something else? Let me know in the comment section down below, and until next time remember to stay safe, be creative, and as always toodles!! ^.^
Deanna Wiltshire graduated from the Lakehead University with a BA in English and Bachelors in Education. She likes cozy sweaters, chai tea, gaming, volunteering within the art community, great food and her Netflix.
When she isn’t vigorously writing, she is crocheting, drawing, or photographing her adventures with her partner (Mr. Canuck). They live in a small city in Ontario, Canada and proud pet parents to two little troublemakers – Argo and Athens (cats).
Child of the Light is the first of the Prophecy Six Series and her debut novel published in 2015. Children of Sirphan is her most recent release (December 2016) and second book of the series. The third book of the series – Sons of Lost Kings – is set to release late fall of 2018.
I find myself writing more in a notebook than I do when writing on a computer. Most of my rough drafts end up being hand written and final drafts are always typed. That’s how I get around the internet mind-controlling me. XD
Thanks. I also find it easier to get a draft down if I write it in a notebook first. It becomes a guideline for my second draft. Also, it allows you to always have an original copy in case something happens to your electronic files. 🙂
Internet is definitely a good one for a writer’s Kryptonite, but I think my bigger Kryptonite is stress. Real life stress is such a muse killer and makes writing the last thing I want to do.
The internet can be a tempting distraction, but I find the random noise to be a bigger issue. There are inevitably those random times where I hear footsteps from nearby, or a muted thud, and a mixture of curiosity and “fight or flight” cause me to mentally drop everything and focus on this unknown, wondering if it’s going to interrupt me in a few moments, or if it represents something I need to be aware of. I think this is why my favorite time to write is late at night, when everyone in a large radius is either asleep, or being very quiet because they don’t want to wake anyone. Of course recently I’ve become quite enamored of foam earplugs, combined with headphones playing music, they really help to blot out the noise of the world, while providing a constant, but still distant sound, to keep me from straining to hear the distant “something” that might still be audible.

ditto for me-this is why the internet can sometimes be the worst!

I agree. With recent things going on in my life (trying to find permanent work), stress has been a real motivation killer…
