CHARACTER CREATION/DEVELOPMENT

Every writer has their own process of creating their characters. This category gives you the chance to see into how my brain works in regards to character development/ creation. Maybe some of my techniques will be helpful for you to use in your creative process.

Dialogue Prompt: Sacrifice Happiness

He leaned against the windowsill, looking out towards the city below. The cool breeze chilled his arms while he gripped the stone railing, contemplating what he had done earlier that morning. He had expected her to come by or at least say something to him about what he had done, but there he was alone like he had been every day since the Northern Prince’s arrival.

There came a knock on the door as his heart fluttered in hopes of seeing the woman appear. As it opened, and his God-brother walked in, all his excitement faded away back to the solemn numbness he had been feeling. The large man lumbered over, kicking the pile of clothes that littered the middle of the bedroom floor before settling on the edge of Revris’s bed. He said nothing, all the large man did was sit in silence and stare.

“What?” Revris growled, watching his God-brother roll his eyes and sigh. What did he do to deserve that reaction.

“If yah think yar actions this mornin’ impressed ‘er, yah’re more of an idiot than I thought.” Gornard grumbled, picking something out of his teeth before leaning back on the bed. “I just came from ‘er room. She ain’t happy wit’ yah.”

“Well… this is my fault. She’ll be happy once I go through with it. Her happiness is all that’s important to me right now.” Revris spat, turning his back to his God-brother.

“Yah’re willin’ to sacrifice yar happiness for her happiness?” Gornard stood, making his way to stand beside the man near the railing. He watched Revris’s shoulder sink, before hearing him chuckle.

“When you say it like that, it does sound silly…” He sighed, pressing the bridge of his nose between his thumb and index finger.

“Have yah thought that yar happiness is what makes her happy?” Gornard noticed the man look up with knotted brows. It appeared that thought hadn’t even crossed his mind. Revris was searching Gornard’s face, as if to try and find the seriousness in the answer.

“Well… hell… I didn’t think of that…”

Dialogue Prompt: Three Years

“I’ve waited three years to see her… what’s a few more hours.” Revris slid down the wall, pressing his back into the cool stone. He tightened the grip on his hands, wringing them in hopes to still his impatience.

Yes, he could wait for a few more hours but the fact was he didn’t want to. He had escaped the clutches of that mad man and found his way to his friend’s city in hopes of seeing her upon his arrival. Now, all the excitement he had gotten under control and nerves that were eroding his stoic expression were fading away with the passing minutes. He wanted to see her but time wasn’t on his side.

Dialogue Prompt: Liar & Thief

He charged into the room, fist balled at his side, teeth grinding so hard that they could shatter. How could Argo have done that to him? How could he have told the King everything after requesting for the Shadow not to speak a word?

“How dare you!?” Revris grabbed the man by the collar of his cape, pushing him against the stone wall of the tiny office. “She told me I could trust you!”

With a quick flick of the lack to the neck of his cape, Argo slipped free of the large man’s grasp. He scurried under Revris’s arm and across the room, lifting his hands in a form of surrender in hope to lower the tension of the situation.

“Then you’re the fool for trusting a known liar and a thief,” Argo stated, hearing the angered Commander growl before charging again. With another quick dodge of a swinging fist, and a scattered scurry pinning his back to the closed door it was clear his original plan didn’t work. “He was concerned… he’s your father. I told no one else of what we spoke of – I swear!”

Concept Art for Emery Thermae

A while back I had the very talented Masha draw up a image of the Prophecy Six main character Liora. Since I loved her style and the way the image turned out I asked her to draw the other member of the Six who has been revealed in book 2- Children of Sirphan. I couldn’t wait to share her with you and I can’t wait to hear what you think. Without further delay, here is the concept art for Emery Thermae – the Child of Water and second of the Six.

Dialogue Prompt: Never Said Thank You

“This is just as much your victory as it is mine.” She glanced over her shoulder to spot the man’s heavy brows knit at hearing her words. She had confused him by the looks of it. That wasn’t so surprising, he wasn’t the type to think outside the obvious. “I never said thank you, did I?”

“For what?” He shook his head, watching as the woman drew closer to take his hands. They were warm as her thumbs made circles against his wrists. He looked up from their hands to meet eyes with the woman before him. A small smirk on her lips as he felt her right hand leave his grip to move to rest against his cheek.

“For… well… everything.” Her voice was low, almost a whisper as she moved closer to rest her forehead against his chin. “Everything that has happened wouldn’t have if not for you.”

Character Build: Emery Thermae

Some of you have started to read book two, while others haven’t gotten around to reading it. Either way, you will likely hear about Emery Thermae. She is the second member of the Six – the child of water. Her character was an interesting challenge and has grown into one of my favourites. With a history as Menk’s draper apprentice, Emery has a passion for making and creating new outfits for herself and others. She is a little bit of a prude, unable to understand why Liora likes to tend to other peoples problems when it is clear she has her own issues to deal with. Emery is forward and loves to tease people – especially Cael and other male peers. As the second of the Six she is the support character for Liora. She is Liora’s big sister and first female friend closer to Liora’s age. Although the two girls have different personalities and interests, they stand by one another and clearly have a connection.

It took a while to develop Emery’s physical appearance. I knew I wanted the two girls to be opposites. Liora has dark hair, darker skin, and a tomboyish personality. Emery has hair light hair, light skin, and a girly personality. Both girls are set in their ways, but both run into barriers in society. Liora is facing gender policing for wanting to take part in “boy activities”, while Emery is being ostracized for being the person she wants to be. As time goes on Emery will grow into a stronger character and in her own way become her own kind of badass.

Fun fact: Thermae was a name for a facilities for bathing in ancient Rome. As Emery’s parents owned the local bathhouse in Menk, her last name is reference to her parents’ business. 🙂

Now, what was the character design I made for Emery?

Character Build: Foe

This week’s character build is focused towards one of my most well liked characters of the Prophecy Six Series though far. He is a father figure, friendly, and at times childish but his good heart makes up for his short comings. He is a loving husband and a good father to his son. This week’s build is for Foe, Steward of Derm and Lord of Demor. So, let’s see the build:

Introducing Liora of Morza

As many of you know I posted a Character Build for Liora last week. It was around this time I came across a young artist named Masha while I was exploring DeviantArt for world building inspiration. It just so happened Masha was open for commissions and after exploring her amazing work I decided I’d take the chance and see what she could do for me.

I sent her the Character Build for Liora, gave her some other details to add and a week later she came back with the most amazing image I could have ever imagined.

May I introduce to you, Liora of Morza:

liora-of-morza

Isn’t she amazing! She is just as I pictured she’d be… and there is so much detail – like the scar on her neck or the pattern of the earring and the latches to the book. Oh, man I have to stop or I will go on and one about this picture…

Anywho, I wanted to share this with you all as I thought some of you would love to see her. In the future I hope to work with Masha again for concepts for all my other characters but I need to start selling paid books before I can do that. XD

If you want to check out Masha’s other art pieces, (and I suggest you do because she is incredibly talented), CLICK HERE.

Until next time stay safe, be creative, and as always – Toodles! ^.^

Character Build: Cáel

Hello everybody!

This week on Character Build I’m focusing on the best friend to the main character and Prince of the North – Cáel. As many in the north have ginger hair and light complexion it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Cáel follows suit. With his curly ginger locks, pale skin covered in freckles, and strong bone structure similar to his father it is clear Cáel’s a Northerner. Here’s the build I made for reference. Enjoy! ^.^
