Welcome to the Writing Challenges category where you can find writing challenges I have done or I am offering. This is probably not going to be the most popular of sections but it is still here for you to explore.

SoLK’s Chapter Edits and Realizations

bookthreeupdate

Last update I talked about being done chapter three, this time I am done chapter four.

Not a huge success but I had to go back to make changes to the previous chapters to help make sense of what the later chapters are going to hold. I have mentioned before I’m not a planner when it comes to writing books.

I have a plan in the sense where I know where I want the story to end up but when it comes to chapters and details I have no freaking clue. I let the characters guide the story and allow their personalities to create the scenes.

For example:

I had originally planned for the story to begin with Liora hurrying to meet the King of the South as per Empress Mardina’s request… but something about that wasn’t right.

Mardina is a relatively kind woman with a protectiveness for the things she “owns” – like Liora. Liora is useful for La’reen with her abilities to see and predict things – and even more-so now that her talents of seeing are getting stronger. Mardina would be in fear of losing Liora to her cousin, and so wouldn’t permit Liora anywhere near Min’din during the King’s visit to La’reen.

As those of you who have read the previous books know, Liora isn’t the type to listen to someone when they say no. She lets her curiosity get the better of her and finds loop holes to get what she wants, (or just straight out does it without any regard of the punishment involved). In book three, one of those moments is seeing the Southern King. She doesn’t just do it because she wants to see what Min’din is like compared to Charn – his Northern counterpart – but wants to find out what Min’din knows about her peoples’ massacre.

The King wants to meet with Liora, not because he wants to meet the girl, but because she is a tool that can get him what he wants. Mardina’s downfall of showing off Liora like one of her prized possessions has come back to bite her in the butt by having someone in the court tell the Southern King that Mardina has a Seer, which in turn could help Min’din find answers about his son that no one else has been able to answer.

This complicated balance of personalities is what drives the first chapters.

Liora wants answers about her people and Min’din’s role in their deaths. Mardina wants to keep her new toy away from her cousin. Min’din wants answers about his son and the future of his country. Everyone has a want, and how they go about achieving it is very different.

So, when I originally started writing I tried to go with what I had planned and soon discovered I was writing the story and not my characters. As soon as I stepped back and basically said, “Liora, take the wheel”, the story began to develop into this complicated wonder I now have before me.

Compared to book two, book three is going to be filled with a lot of events intersecting and reacting with one another. Liora is becoming a player in the game of politics, and soon her actions are going to start affecting more than just herself or the Six. Book Three: Sons of Lost Kings, is going to be where Liora wakes up and realizes that one person can make an impact on their world, whether they want to or not.

Anyways… that was my writing realization of the day.ย

Until next time – toodles!!

Trying to get out of a writing funk…

So… yeah… I haven’t stuck to the promise I made to post more. I know… I’m terrible… but life happens and sometimes you get pulled away from what you want to do to deal with what you need to do.

The last year has been one of those years where the second I want to do something another thing has gotten in the way. First it was moving into a new place, then I got two new kittens (which if you ever tried writing with kittens it is a challenge), and then I started a new job that took my focus away from what I wanted to do when I got home. In summary – being an adult sucks and don’t ever grow up. XD

But, in all seriousness I also was suffering from a lacking desire to write. For the longest time I had used writing as an escape, something I did for fun… but after writing two books and focusing so much on sales I realized that my passion was turning into another job. For some that is great. Becoming a writer that just does that for their job is a lot of peoples goals, but as I was working towards that goal that I thought I wanted I realized it wasn’t all that it was cracked up to be. I burned out and that little fire that I had turned into coals.

It has been almost a year since I seriously wrote something on here. It has been even longer since I started working on a story or planning out a book. I have book three planned out and it will be written… but it has taken some time to find the motivation to do so. I don’t know when I will post next. I have all these ideas and plans but it is the matter of motivation that gets in the way. The only reason I’m writing this now is more out of trying to get what I’ve been feeling out than anything else.

Anyways, that’s enough rambling for today. I think I’ll leave you all to your weekends. ๐Ÿ™‚

Toodles for now.

Wandering Inspiration

Hello World Out There World!

I know I haven’t been posting a lot as of late. Recently I’ve had a lot of things on my plate that I’ve been trying to balance, so once I’ve gotten everything under control I will be trying to post more regularly.

The reason I’m posting this today is because I decided to take a break and watch a few online videos. Now, my background isn’t in sci-fi but for whatever reason my brain came up with so many little ideas for short stories after watching one video. I grew up with Star Trek, Alien vs. Predator, Star Wars, and many other sci-fi movies. Heck I’m even named after a Star Trek character, (Deanna Troi). So, finding inspiration to write sci-fi shouldn’t have been that surprising to me.

Anyways, I know many of you who follow me are exploring a variety of genres and that’s why I knew some among you would enjoy this amazing short film called WANDERERS. This hasn’t been my first time watching it. About a year ago before writing my first book I watch this short film without getting such an overwhelming amount of inspiration from it. Now, a year later watching the same film I thought of the potential of using the bases of this film for a collection of short stories. Weird how time can change your perspective of inspiration. It could also be that when I first watched WANDERERS I wasn’t open to inspiration due to my lack of writing in my life at the time, but now that I’ve written almost every day since and expanded my mind to think more creatively that maybe that’s why I am seeing the potential this short film has to offer.

After all inspiration is everywhere, right?

So, without further delay here is the short film WANDERER. Let me know if you found it as inspiring in the comments down below and until next time – toodles! :3

Seasons By Sound

Hello World Out There World!

Today is going to be a little different. I’m using a writing prompt not for my own short stories or book but just for fun. As I was exploring Pinterest this morning I happened across a really interesting prompt by the talented Sarcastic Muse. If you want to know more about them click on their name to be transported to their blog. ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyways, this weeks writing prompt is about the seasons and describing them by only sound. I love this idea because sound can be a great way to get the reader to connect with the environment of your story. So, let’s try this shall we. :3

Seasons By Sound

The bitter wind howled around me. My feet crunching beneath the white snow. The running of a car engine echoes from down the street as my neighbor’s shoveling hisses through the air.

Baby birds chirp from the tree in the backyard. The tinging of rain drops on the roof and deck vibrate through the open screen door. Children’s laughter rings up from the street followed by splashing as they play in the puddles forming near the gutters.

Cicada’s sing high up in the trees out of sight but not out of mind. The loud humming of a lawn mower from down the street breaks the silences along with someone blasting talk radio. Kids are screaming, their flip-flopped feet smacking against the pavement as they chase each other with water balloons.

The rustling of leaves in the trees that follow with the hissing of those free across the ground. The crinkling of my hands pulling my coat closer to my body as I tap my foot at the bus stop. The wind whispering warning of the coming cold against my skin making my ears numb.

Onomatopoeia Edition:

Crunch, crunch, crunch. Woooo. Shic, shic, shic. “Frick it’s cold!”

Chirp, whistle, chirp. Ting, ting, ting. Ah! Haha! SPLASH!

Bizzzzzzzz. Urrrrrrrrrrr. Mrrrrrrrrrrrr. AAHHHHH! Fop, fop, fop, fop, fop. Splat!

Shhhhhhhh. ssssss. Thunk, thunk. Crinkle. “Frick it’s getting cold!”

Merely A Human

I looked around the room.

Every coloured eye was glowing back in the flashing lights of the underling club. I was an idiot to think bring Royce to this place was a good idea. He was a mere rat in a room full of hungry cats now that I had the moment to think about it.

There by one of the standing tables was a group of vamps drinking their bloody mary’s and eyeing up the guy that I was no responsibile for. If I didn’t care so much I would have left him on his own in a place like this, but something about this guy had grown on me like the mould in the corner of a gym bathroom.

I didn’t like the fact his partnership was causing me to work around what I would normally do. It wasn’t like I could hide him here. Most in this room relied on scent to hunt and they liked the jelly meat suits of humans over their veggatarian diets of donar blood.

“They don’t look that weird,” Royce whispered, drawing my attention back to him. He stood beside me, his eyes looking over the room. “I was excepting…”

“Bladerunner? Night of the Living dead type shit?” I spat, rolling my eyes.

Of course he’d think that. The upperlings always had their wild imaginations. They painted us out to be monsters and sure some of us were but not all. Some of us were just like those mortals that controlled the city above. But, it was harder to explain that than just letting his little monkey brain come up with his own explaination.

“Stick close,” I growled.ย I pulled him to my side, wrapping an arm around his neck. “If anyone asks you’re my food.”

He smirked, nodding his head as he wrapped an arm around my waist.

Royce was handling this whole underling thing better than I had thought. Most humans would have been panicking or would have tried getting away. This guy didn’t do that. He kept his cool and pulled in close as if I had put him under some kind of trance.

Pretty close. Smells nice. Freaky glowing eyes.ย

I wanted to laugh at his thoughts. They jumped between me and the room. Not that I was going to let on that I could hear them. He was a monkey, letting his hormones control his mind until something caught his attention pulling his thoughts from my scent to whatever.

The eyes of the patrons watched me more than my partner. Their looks of confusion and up turned lips of disgust made it obvious our presence was ruining their vibe. That was fine. I rarely spent time in places like this any more. They could think whatever they wanted about me. I was here for information.

“You!”

There came a hissing from behind me as a red eyed vamp stopped before us. Her eyes danced over Royce, while she licked her lips. This creature must have sense Royce’s heartbeat and smelt the sweat that stained the collar and pits of his shirt. She slinked closer, sniffing the air.

“Piss off,” I snarled, pushing the vamp back as she hissed. “He’s mine.”

“No one own’s a upperling sweetheart,” the vamp hummed, moving closer again, “not in this place.”

I rolled my eyes, pulling Royce closer. He was a head taller than me and if I was in the upper level he would be the threatening one. Here he was nothing. He was just food.

“Do you know what I am?” I growled, lunging forward to wrap my fingers around the vamps throat. “I eat pests like you for breakfast.”

“And what, that male there is your dessert?” she chuckled.

I let her throat go, stepping back to wrap my arms around Royce’s waist. He was stiff as a board, unsure what I was ย doing but he knew better than to cause a scene in a place like this. I ran my fingers up his button shirt, loosening his tie before peering back at the vamp.

“He’s nothing but food,” I whispered. Royce placed his hand on my back, looking at me with his charming smirk. “Merely a human.”

The vamp hissed, storming off into the crowd as I let Royce go. His heart still raced as he averted his eyes from my glance. His face was flushed as he breathed through his nose.

“It’s all right, Royce. You’re not the first human to fall for me.”

Is she serious? Must be a joke… should I…

He laughed, shaking his head. The flush in his cheeks brighter than before when I didn’t join in his moment of embarrassed humour.
