SoLK’s Chapter Edits and Realizations

bookthreeupdate

Last update I talked about being done chapter three, this time I am done chapter four.

Not a huge success but I had to go back to make changes to the previous chapters to help make sense of what the later chapters are going to hold. I have mentioned before I’m not a planner when it comes to writing books.

I have a plan in the sense where I know where I want the story to end up but when it comes to chapters and details I have no freaking clue. I let the characters guide the story and allow their personalities to create the scenes.

For example:

I had originally planned for the story to begin with Liora hurrying to meet the King of the South as per Empress Mardina’s request… but something about that wasn’t right.

Mardina is a relatively kind woman with a protectiveness for the things she “owns” – like Liora. Liora is useful for La’reen with her abilities to see and predict things – and even more-so now that her talents of seeing are getting stronger. Mardina would be in fear of losing Liora to her cousin, and so wouldn’t permit Liora anywhere near Min’din during the King’s visit to La’reen.

As those of you who have read the previous books know, Liora isn’t the type to listen to someone when they say no. She lets her curiosity get the better of her and finds loop holes to get what she wants, (or just straight out does it without any regard of the punishment involved). In book three, one of those moments is seeing the Southern King. She doesn’t just do it because she wants to see what Min’din is like compared to Charn – his Northern counterpart – but wants to find out what Min’din knows about her peoples’ massacre.

The King wants to meet with Liora, not because he wants to meet the girl, but because she is a tool that can get him what he wants. Mardina’s downfall of showing off Liora like one of her prized possessions has come back to bite her in the butt by having someone in the court tell the Southern King that Mardina has a Seer, which in turn could help Min’din find answers about his son that no one else has been able to answer.

This complicated balance of personalities is what drives the first chapters.

Liora wants answers about her people and Min’din’s role in their deaths. Mardina wants to keep her new toy away from her cousin. Min’din wants answers about his son and the future of his country. Everyone has a want, and how they go about achieving it is very different.

So, when I originally started writing I tried to go with what I had planned and soon discovered I was writing the story and not my characters. As soon as I stepped back and basically said, “Liora, take the wheel”, the story began to develop into this complicated wonder I now have before me.

Compared to book two, book three is going to be filled with a lot of events intersecting and reacting with one another. Liora is becoming a player in the game of politics, and soon her actions are going to start affecting more than just herself or the Six. Book Three: Sons of Lost Kings, is going to be where Liora wakes up and realizes that one person can make an impact on their world, whether they want to or not.

Anyways… that was my writing realization of the day.

Until next time – toodles!!

Concept Art for Emery Thermae

A while back I had the very talented Masha draw up a image of the Prophecy Six main character Liora. Since I loved her style and the way the image turned out I asked her to draw the other member of the Six who has been revealed in book 2- Children of Sirphan. I couldn’t wait to share her with you and I can’t wait to hear what you think. Without further delay, here is the concept art for Emery Thermae – the Child of Water and second of the Six.

Emery Thermae Of Menk.jpg

Character Build: Emery Thermae

Some of you have started to read book two, while others haven’t gotten around to reading it. Either way, you will likely hear about Emery Thermae. She is the second member of the Six – the child of water. Her character was an interesting challenge and has grown into one of my favourites. With a history as Menk’s draper apprentice, Emery has a passion for making and creating new outfits for herself and others. She is a little bit of a prude, unable to understand why Liora likes to tend to other peoples problems when it is clear she has her own issues to deal with. Emery is forward and loves to tease people – especially Cael and other male peers. As the second of the Six she is the support character for Liora. She is Liora’s big sister and first female friend closer to Liora’s age. Although the two girls have different personalities and interests, they stand by one another and clearly have a connection.

It took a while to develop Emery’s physical appearance. I knew I wanted the two girls to be opposites. Liora has dark hair, darker skin, and a tomboyish personality. Emery has hair light hair, light skin, and a girly personality. Both girls are set in their ways, but both run into barriers in society. Liora is facing gender policing for wanting to take part in “boy activities”, while Emery is being ostracized for being the person she wants to be. As time goes on Emery will grow into a stronger character and in her own way become her own kind of badass.

Fun fact: Thermae was a name for a facilities for bathing in ancient Rome. As Emery’s parents owned the local bathhouse in Menk, her last name is reference to her parents’ business. 🙂

Now, what was the character design I made for Emery?

Old Word Friday: Words Found in Children of Sirphan

Hello World!

So this Old Word Friday is going to focus on the old words I mixed into my new book Children of Sirphan, which is going to be released in 4 days (December 20th). I thought it would be appropriate to bring back some old words that I shared back at the beginning of the Old Word Friday series and they just so happen to be in use throughout my most recent book. So, without any further delay here we go!

Mullock

This word is a noun which means rubbish or nonsense. The word mullock is still popular in places like Australia and many of you would likely have heard the word mullarkey or malarkey – which is the modernized and more popular term deriving from mullock.

How do you pronounce mullock?

MUL – LUCK

How to use this word in a sentence:

“Well… you have done some unexplainable things that were explained by that mullock…” Caldor huffed.

Or…

He only hoped his colleagues wouldn’t denounce him for believing such mullock.

Should mullock make a comeback?

In a sense it already has with the term mullarkey or malarkey being so popular in other parts of the world. Mullock, though, is a word I use on a regular bases and have used in my books. I would like to see more people welcoming the word into their vocabulary but I do not know if that is going to happen anytime soon.

Twirlblast

Twirlblast is a noun which is another name given to a tornado or wind funnel. I chose to share this word originally because I like how it sounded and thought it funny that tornado had replaced such a silly sounding word.

How do you pronounce twirlblast?

TWIRL – BLAST

How is twirlblast used in a sentence?

“It looks like a twirlblast came through here,” Liora sighed as the old sage spun around to face her.

Or…

“Hey yoou…” Cáel strained to use the common word, while keeping a calm tone of voice. He avoided stepping on the books that lined the floor like pop pots. He didn’t need her turning her anger towards him. “Looks like a twirlblast came tearin’ through here, eh?”

Should twirlblast make a comeback?

I think it would be a fun word to know but wouldn’t be a popular word to use. I only say that because the word twirlblast sounds like your downplaying the dangers of what a tornado can do. A twirlblast sounds like a blast of hot air in the summer not a spinning funnel of destruction.

Nibling

An oldie but still one of my favourites. Nibling means niece or nephew. They are your siblings offspring, therefore making them your niblings. I like this word because it combines two words (niece and nephew) in to one gender neutral word (nibling). It is also very fun to say.

How do you pronounce nibling?

NIB – LING

How do you use nibling in a sentence?

“No, Li, I need yah here to help Marcia,” Foe smiled, “her family will be visitin’ and yah’ll get to meet me niblings, who I’m sure yah’ll love.”

Or…

Revris is Rebin’s nibling.

Should nibling make a comeback?

Why not? It is a fun word. It simplifies things… and there was already a movement at a school in the UK that wanted to bring nibling back. If the children are wanting to use the word I don’t see why we shouldn’t bring this word back into the normal rotation of verbal conversation.

So there are just the three most used OLD WORDS I used in my most recent book – Children of Sirphan! Keep your eyes open closer to December 20th to find out where you can get your copy of this wildly popular young adult fantasy. Until next time be creative, stay safe, and as always Toodles! ^.^

UPDATE: Release Date, Official Site & Special Offer

Hello Everyone,

I am hopefully going to post a monthly update from now on. I aim to release these updates the first of every month to let you know about upcoming posts, information pertaining to the Prophecy Six Series, changes in the schedule, and you know… some special offers that you may be interested in, (like at the bottom of this post…)

So, let’s get started:

Upcoming Posts!

As some of you have noticed I have started posting some recipes and my photography on this blog. My goal is to turn Prophecy Six Blog into a place where I can share all my hobbies with you such as my cooking, photography, and DIY projects along with keeping it as a hub for my sharing my writing.

With work and managing several sites online I found it was time to accumulate everything into one ‘mega’ blog in hopes that some of you are interested in what I have to post.

Another series I’m hoping to bring back is Prompts, which I aim to put out every Monday.

The Schedule I have planned is:

MondayWriting, Dialogue, or Character Prompts

Tuesday – Photography, recipe, or DIY

Wednesday – Prophecy Six Focused (Character build, themes, images, book bits).

ThursdayThinking Thursdays

FridayOld Word Friday

Saturday + Sunday – Recovery Days or Special Announcement Days

And yes, before you say it, I know I’m crazy… but that’s part of being a writer.

Prophecy Six Series Announcement:

Today marks only 20 days until book two – Children of Sirphan – is released. I’m so excited I’m just jumping with glee.

As the book is being released I have made some major changes to the Official Book site. Such as:

Updated the About Author’s Page, Layout of the Website, Organization of the site, and Character’s of the Series Pages.

What I have recently added to the site are new location information, information pertaining to the Gods, what the series is about, a contact page, and a subscription page.

Why should you subscribe?
Because the first 50 subscribers it a free e-book version of the second book! I will go into detail about this closer to the release date but you can go to the site now, sign up and you would have reserved a free copy of Children of Sirphan. Subscribers also get updated once month about special events and offers before those who aren’t subscribed, meaning you’re more likely to get the offers before they run out. I’d sign up if I wasn’t the moderator. XD

Anyways, I think I’m done for now. I will be posting another update on December 10th, so keep your eyes peeled for that. Until next time stay safe, get creative, and as always toodles! ^.^
